Pregnant women who plan to make an adoption plan for their child can absolutely spend time with their baby at the hospital and have that right under Florida Law. A birth mother is in complete control over what happens at the hospital. Some birth moms choose to have the adoptive parents stay at the hospital and be in the room during the birth and others don’t. Some choose to room in with the baby and others don’t.

Be Mindful Of Time

While you can choose to spend time with the child, you should be aware of the amount of time you have at hand. If you choose to spend time with the infant immediately after birth, you may only get a few minutes. For the average birth, your hospital stay is 24-48 hours. If you want an afternoon, you will want to do it sooner rather than later. The baby has various checkups over the first 24 hrs and you need to be clear about your intentions. This also means understanding that you may not get as much time as you want.

Last Minute Changes

If you think you don’t want to spend time with the child, do leave yourself some breathing room in the contract. Giving birth is a tremendous and emotional event. Some people will decide it would be best if they don’t see the baby while giving birth. Others will suddenly feel an urge to hold them. Either way, you and the adoptive family should be clear about concessions for these types of issues.

Be Prepared For Emotions

Emotions will be running high so have a plan in place to help you process what you are feeling. It is not uncommon for people to feel guilt, shame, fear, or angry at the situation. With hormones surging in the body after birth, many emotions are exacerbated. Some feel intense sadness and struggle with their decision all over again. It is a good idea to have supportive and loving folks nearby to hug on and tell you jokes.
